BoardEffect Pricing 2026: What Diligent's Nonprofit Portal Costs
BoardEffect doesn't publish pricing. Here's what its Pro and Plus tiers include, what Diligent ownership changed, and what a 15-member nonprofit board should ask before signing.
How Much Does BoardEffect Cost in 2026?
BoardEffect does not publish a price. Its pricing page lists two tiers — Pro and Plus — with feature lists and no dollar amounts, ending in “Need a custom quote? Chat to us.” BoardEffect describes the platform as an annual subscription with fees based on tiers of users rather than individual seats.
Quick Answer: BoardEffect is quote-only in 2026. It sells two tiers — Pro (one board) and Plus (unlimited boards, plus minutes and messaging) — as an annual subscription priced by user tiers. No dollar figure is published anywhere on BoardEffect’s or Diligent’s site, and there is no advertised self-serve free trial. For comparison, I’mBoard is $149/month flat per board — $74/month for EIN-verified 501(c)(3) nonprofits, exactly 50% off every month — with a free trial until after your next board meeting and no credit card.

What BoardEffect Publishes
BoardEffect has been part of Diligent since 2016. Within Diligent’s lineup it is the nonprofit and mission-driven brand — foundations, healthcare systems, higher education, credit unions and social enterprises — while Diligent Boards is the enterprise and public-company product. BoardEffect claims 5,000 mission-driven boards.
The public tiers, in BoardEffect’s own framing:
| Tier | Positioned for | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | ”Smaller mission-driven organizations in need of essential board management features” | One board, AI board book summarization, audit log, Microsoft integration, survey templates, SSO and MFA |
| Plus | ”Large or complex nonprofit boards” | Everything in Pro, plus unlimited boards, Minutes, Messenger, data integrations and Market Insights |
Note what sits in Plus: minutes. If your secretary needs a minutes workflow — and every board that files an approved record of its motions does — Pro is not the tier you are buying, whatever it costs. The same is true of a board with standing finance and governance committees: committee spaces are the thing that pushes a nonprofit up a tier in this category.
A note on tier names: BoardEffect’s tiers are Pro and Plus. Older comparison articles that describe an “Essentials / Complete / Enterprise” structure are out of date.
Is There a Free Trial?
Not an advertised one. Neither boardeffect.com nor Diligent’s BoardEffect page offers a trial path or credit-card signup — the calls to action are “request pricing” and “request a demo.” Capterra lists BoardEffect as having no free trial and no free version. (GetApp’s spec box disagrees, but the vendor’s own site provides no trial route, so treat “no self-serve trial” as the working assumption and confirm on your demo call.)
Contract length, implementation fees and renewal terms are not published either. In this category the shape is predictable even when the numbers are not: an annual term, an auto-renew clause with a notice window measured in months, and a one-time onboarding or implementation charge on top of Year 1. Ask for all three in writing before your board votes on the expenditure.
Why the Price Is Hidden
The reasoning is the same across every demo-gated board portal, and it is structural rather than sinister. A quote-only motion needs a rep to qualify you, an account executive to scope your board and negotiate, and implementation time on the vendor’s side — on every deal. That headcount has to be paid for out of the contract, which puts a floor under the price that self-serve products simply do not carry.
For an executive director, the hidden price has a second cost: you cannot put a number in front of the board without booking a call first. If your spending policy sends anything above roughly $5,000 — or any multi-year commitment — to the full board for a motion, “we need to schedule a demo before I can tell you the number” is an awkward place to start.
The only specific BoardEffect dollar figures circulating publicly come from a competing vendor’s comparison page, self-reported from “competitive evaluations,” in Canadian dollars. We are not going to launder that into a fact, and we are not going to publish a band we cannot source. If you get a written quote, that quote is the only real number.
We took the other path: I’mBoard publishes its price on a public page, so the ED can bring a figure to the meeting instead of a calendar invitation.

What Reviewers Say About Cost and Support
BoardEffect’s Capterra rating is 4.4 out of 5 across 127 reviews, with Value for Money at 4.2 across 117. Reviewers consistently praise the centralized document storage, agenda creation and security posture.
The recurring complaint is post-acquisition service. Multiple reviewers describe slower resolution times, account-manager turnover and a weaker knowledge base following the Diligent organizational changes. One nonprofit reviewer concluded it was “NOT the product for non-profit organizations based on the price, difficulty of use and lack of local support.” Other gripes cluster on folder navigation and mobile performance with large documents.
None of that makes BoardEffect a bad product for the institutions it was built for. It does mean you should ask pointed questions about support response times and renewal terms on the call — and that a 12-director nonprofit board should test adoption, not just features. The portal your least technical director will not log into is the portal half your board never adopts.
Who Should Choose Which
Choose BoardEffect If
- You are a foundation, hospital system, university, credit union or large nonprofit with a trustee board and a formal procurement process
- Your board is large or committee-heavy and you need multiple boards under one roof (the Plus tier’s core promise)
- You already run other Diligent products and want them in one relationship
- Annual contracting, an implementation project and a scheduled onboarding are normal for your organization
Choose I’mBoard If
- You are the executive director of a 501(c)(3) who assembles the packet, chases RSVPs to make quorum, and often ends up taking the minutes
- You want the price before the call — $149/month flat per board, $74/month once your 501(c)(3) status is EIN-verified, every director and every committee included
- You want monthly billing you can cancel, rather than an annual term with an auto-renew notice window
- Your board’s spending policy makes a 12-month commitment a governance question, not just a budget one
- You would rather be running your next meeting this month than scheduled for an implementation

FAQ
How much does BoardEffect cost?
BoardEffect does not publish pricing. It offers two quote-only tiers — Pro and Plus — sold as an annual subscription priced by tiers of users rather than individual seats. No public figure exists on the vendor’s own site, so the only reliable number is the written quote you receive.
What is the difference between BoardEffect Pro and Plus?
Pro covers a single board with AI board book summarization, an audit log, Microsoft integration, survey templates, and SSO with MFA. Plus adds unlimited boards, the Minutes module, Messenger, data integrations and Market Insights. Because minutes sit in Plus, most nonprofit boards evaluating BoardEffect are effectively pricing the Plus tier.
Does BoardEffect offer a free trial?
BoardEffect does not advertise a self-serve free trial or credit-card signup on its own site or on Diligent’s BoardEffect page — both route you to a demo and a custom quote. Capterra lists it as having no free trial and no free version. Confirm current terms on your demo call.
Is BoardEffect the same as Diligent?
BoardEffect is owned by Diligent, which acquired it in 2016. Within Diligent’s portfolio, BoardEffect serves nonprofit, healthcare, higher-education and credit-union boards, while Diligent Boards is the enterprise and public-company product. For what the enterprise tier costs, see our Diligent pricing guide.
Are there implementation or onboarding fees on top of the subscription?
BoardEffect publishes no fee schedule. Board portals sold through a demo-and-quote motion typically carry a one-time setup or onboarding charge in addition to the subscription. Ask for all-in Year-1 pricing — subscription plus implementation, training and any modules — before you compare quotes, and ask what Year 2 renews at.
Is BoardEffect a good fit for a small nonprofit board?
It is built for institutions with formal procurement — foundations, health systems, universities, credit unions — not for a 501(c)(3) with a $250K—$3M budget and a dozen volunteer directors. The tier structure, the quote gate and the annual contract are all sized for organizations with a finance office to run them. If you are the ED who builds the packet and takes the minutes yourself, compare the options that publish a price and let you try them first: see our BoardEffect alternatives guide and the nonprofit board portal comparison.
What happens to our minutes and documents if we do not renew?
Ask this in writing, and ask it before you sign rather than at renewal. In this category, export terms are a contract question, not a product feature — and boards that assumed otherwise have lost their archives. I’mBoard’s answer is published: a full archive export, free, forever, whether or not you are a customer.
